It took a couple of years of epic gigs and artistic maturation to get the raw material for “Lightin’ the Shadows”, Kaly Live Dub’s upcoming release. Deeply rooted in reggae, this burning double album also shows the band’s ability to learn from diverse and eclectic inluences. Opening his views to new musical experiments, the gang from Lyon goes far beyond reverbs and delays : electro-friendly, the irst disc is made of haunting and crawling tracks, raised here and there with some Wobble Bass (“In Case”, “The brown Noise”), or spreading an ecstatic astonishment (“Lightin’ the Shadows”). Hip-Hop is also given a irst-rank place with the stunning “Conlicts”, carried by the singular and punchy low of K-the-I??? (from Big Dada). Within the exploration of these new-sounding ields, the band’s artistic signature remains : the fundamental basis is a warm, vibrant and organic sound, played live by talented musicians.
The second part of the album is designed to ill worldwide Sound Systems with contentment. Faithful to his roots, the band displays a boiling and shiny dub, used as the basis for musical ramblings and psychedelic journeys. For example, the magniicent “Wackies”, stretched-out plentiful soundtrack for maze-like daydreams, or the dub-by-the-book “Peaceful Warrior” and “What a Life”, respectively sung by Joe Pilgrim and Bigga Ranx, bringing their brilliant energy to this plentiful record.
This album, close to excellence, clearly fulils all expectations, and is proving once again the vitality of the French dub scene, and an always renewed inspiration for Kaly Live Dub.
