There it is, the Zentone Chapter 2! And not with one but two volumes! Fifteen years after the first Zentone, Zenzile and High Tone are finally backing up the highly anticipated Zentone Chapter 2. The two most legendary dub groups in France are taking up the challenge a second time and offering us a new album, co-produced by Jarring Effects and Black Dub. An opus that will delight the ears of all dub lovers. One of its specificities? The voices of Nai-Jah, Jolly Joseph (Dub Shepherds), Rod Taylor and Nazamba (already heard on OBF riddims) enrich some of the compositions.

High Tone, Zenzile, Zentone

On the CD : 10 tracks mixed by Zenzile. Faithful to their DNA, the Angevins masterfully handle the writing and construction of titles. Atmospheric atmosphere guaranteed.

Zenzile, High Tone, Zentone

The double vinyl, designed for sound systems, includes 12 tracks mixed High Tone (four tracks, their instrumental version and a third mix with an even more dub structure). The mixes are more instinctive, the four Lyonnais have clearly let go. Their mixes are a snapshot of the moment, an old-fashioned dub with nicely flipped intros.

Zenzile, High Tone, Zentone

Zentone Chapter 2, a meeting at the top that will delight all dub lovers, since it is not one, but two volumes that are entering the bins: a shanti atmosphere CD which includes the 10 mixes Zenzile version and the double vinyl, designed for sound systems with 12 High Tone mix versions (four tracks, their instrumental version and a third mix with an even more dub structure).

Listening to this new opus, if there is one word that comes to mind it is « humanity ». Zentone Chapter 2 was conceived in the midst of a pandemic. The 9 musicians met in Lyon for a week for a studio session. And the least we can say is that this strange period did not impact their creativity, far from it! This time around, and unlike in 2006, they decided to work without a net with a taped rehearsal device. No fuss about the placement of the microphones, no headphones, but a setup with a sound system where live and improvisation were the key words. The collective and spontaneity are at the heart of this project. This need for humanity can also be found in the warmth of sound: analog takes precedence, farewell to the cold computer interface between music and humans.

This return to simplicity is also found in the mixes. Each of the two groups has chosen to mix the tracks on an analog console. High Tone side, the mixes are more instinctive, the four Lyonnais have clearly let go. Their mixes are a snapshot of the moment, an old-fashioned dub with nicely flipped intros. It’s the record that High Tone has released the least in 20 years! Faithful to their DNA, the Angevins for their part masterfully handle the writing and construction of titles. Atmospheric atmosphere guaranteed.

Another specificity of this new opus is the collaboration with singers. The voices of Nai-Jah, Jolly Joseph (Dub Shepherds), Rod Taylor and Nazamba (already heard on OBF riddims) enrich the compositions. By choosing singers who come from live and sound system, Zentone asserts its tendency to play music live. One thing is certain, with this new opus, the live band is the synthesis of all generations of dub. Zentone plays instrumental dub, then the mix with techniques specific to dub and does not hide his inspirations from King Tubby to Prince Jammy via Scientist. But they also integrate the new dub scene. A lively, artisanal, collective, inspired and inspiring scene that has not finished talking about it.

With more than 11 maxi on the counter, Uzul, founding member of the legendary Lyon band Kaly Live Dub, unveils Evolve, his first solo album. A colorful disc that abolishes the boundaries between musical aesthetics. Eleven surprising titles that break the codes and retrace the evolution of his music, his life and his influences. With Evolve, Uzul offers us a record resolutely bass music and techno in which are distilled its multiple influences, from dub to dubstep via UK bass, tech-house or trip hop.

Uzul - Evolve - Eco-friendly vinyl - Pre-order

> Evolve is also available in a limited edition in eco-friendly vinyl <

The album opens with the introduction Octopus. With its heady sonar and its enchanting theme drowned under the bubbles of an underwater diver, this piece sets the tone of the album. Immersed and cut off from the current tumultuous world, we arrive in an aquatic musical universe whose melodic and abyssal depths we will explore.

Water is the red thread of this album. We find it in the artwork, in the names of the titles but also more conceptual. From water comes life and it accompanies us throughout our existence. And that’s what this is about since Uzul is taking us into his bubble. He gives us a global vision of all the musical aesthetics that have marked his career, as a producer but also from a more personal point of view. Uzul mixes with a master hand the musical styles that have built it and made it dance over the years. The use of filters and sound effects ends up immersing us in this aquatic universe, we are literally underwater, cut off from the world, in a transformed reality. Evolve proves to us that we can, in music, get out of the boxes and break the codes to achieve a beautiful harmony.

It is the song Aquatic which launches the album. The dub atmosphere brought by synares and skanks mix with techno colors, all supported by a grooved and glittered bass.

We continue with Nemo, a gentle walk in a mysterious world. Its lively groove echoes the UK bass and its electronica theme gives it a pop side.

It’s the song Water for Life that launches the most techno part of Evolve. An evolving and melodic track which takes on an English club tint and which is reminiscent of the sound system dub culture thanks to the chanted voices, the skanks and the bass line.

Allo confirms the techno style of the album. A track resolutely acid but also very groove thanks to its rhythm. We end up on a line of bass typical of the dubstep style. A piece at the crossroads of several styles, like the album.

The techno exploration continues with Sea Horse. Its hypnotic TB303 synth set creates a cold atmosphere. The electronic wind tunnel and metallic sounds evolve over this progressive piece.

We reached the peak with Ultra Abyssal, a tribute to techno and deepdubstep. It’s groovy, it’s broken and it’s sure to ignite the dancefloors!

After the storm, let’s go for a nice electronic ride with Subtil, a deep dubstep style mixed with electronic trip-hop sounds. A piece that makes sense when listening to the lyrics. «I’m feeling good» is the message that Uzul wants to convey. In the face of life’s torments, we must keep our heads up, keep moving forward and keep hope at all costs. A melancholy and sensitive title, amplified by the dreamlike theme played by Bernard Pelmoine (first keyboardist of Kaly Live Dub ) invited for the occasion.

We continue with Diving, the most dub title of the album. A nod from Uzul to his passive fan of Jamaican music. The electronic atmosphere, in the spirit of Bill Laswell, brought by a big bass line and hypnotic percussion, beats this title that should satisfy fans of the genre.

Music is a game is a tribute to the rave movement in which Uzul participated. This techno title is tempered by the theme of melodica reggae, directed by Lion (musician of the Belgian band Dub Empire ).

Oceans comes to close the album gently. We end up with a soaring trip-hop dub reminiscent of the Rythm & Sound label’s productions.

Evolve proves to us that we can, in music, get out of the boxes and break the codes to arrive at a beautiful harmony.

Four years after the release of the diptych «Walk the walk/ Talk the talk», which he made in Jamaica with some of the icons that made the golden age of reggae in the 70s, producer Martin Nathan repeats and announces his return to the island for Beyond The Blue. An album in collaboration with the mytic Big Youth. A first single will be released on April 15th, pending the arrival of the album on May 28th.

A story in History

How to condense in a sound bite, the incredible and terrible journey, experienced by Martin Nathan and his longtime friend Samuel Clayton Jr, both gone to Jamaica in March 2020, for a collaboration with the legendary Big Youth. The context of a first and unprecedented world lockdown has only left them very little time to record the takes with the famous DJ, before they both contracted the virus. Martin Nathan was lucky enough to be able to get back to France, although had to remain confined and to take care of himself alone in his studio during five weeks upon his return. Samuel Clayton Jr, however, did not come back, struck down by the disease in Kingston.

The iron determination of the producer, supported by the Jamaican producer Stephen Stewart, did nonetheless bring the project to completion.

With more than 14 albums and 750+ concerts behind him already, Martin Nathan ventures for 20 years n ow, into many artistic and stylistic experiments, und er the name of Brain Damage . Acclaimed as o ne of the founders of the French dub scene in the late 1990s, he soon appears as a major influence for a whole generation of musicians. But the artist is definitely not among those who forever rest on the models he founded, and he constantly reinvents himself, as his myriad projects flow , especiall y multiplying always more prestigious collaborations with figures like High Tone (fr), Vibronics (uk), Horace Andy (Ja), or Harrison Stafford (usa) more recently. Along with his many productions, it is also with his truly live and explosive pe rformances, that Martin Nathan has grown a solid reputation throughout the international scene, and itis exceptionally rare to see an artist celeb rating his 20th career anniversary, with so much vitality and creativity.

Big Youth

Born in 1949, in Kington’s Trenchtown neighborhood, Manley Augustus Buchanan was among the very first artists to develop the DJ sty le, precursor of rap, and quickly became one of the most recognized. Eulogist of Rastafarism, he mostly focuses on social and conscious the mes, what was totally new when in 1972 he stood out as the only serious rival for U Roy , creator of the genre. Whilst collaborating with nearly all greatest artistic figures of the time in Jamaica, he also constituted a major influence for Bob Marley among many. He managed as we ll to catch the attention of the English punk scene, in particular of Johnny Rotten ( Sex Pistols / PIL ), within the hype of the famous punky-reggae parties. Nowadays still ceaselessly imitated and sampled, Big Youth or Jah Youth , as he is af fectionately know in Jamaica, remains the most moving and the most popular DJ of the golden age of 1970s roots reggae.

Samuel Clayton Jr

Son of Samuel Clayto n, who played within the legendary Jamaican ensemble Mystic Revelation of Rastafari, Sam started as railroad engineer, before dedicating himself to what will set his life direction: music in a broad sense. Significant figure as sound engineer, live and studio like wis, he worked with the greatests, from the Rolling Stones to Steel Pulse or Toots & the Maytals to nam e but a few, most of the time along with his longtime friend Stephen Stewart ( Harry J Studio, Burning Spear …). After living in New York and in England, he settled at last in France in the 1990s. He quickly becomes an essential connection for all savvy reggae musicians there, and accompanied most of the French bands in Jamaica to live out their production and meeting fantasies, through projects with Sly & Robbie, David Hinds , Horace Andy etc… But if Sam had the address book to make these happen, he will be remembered for his ability to build bridges between cultures, however different they may be.

His outstanding capacities led him beyond Jamaican musics and he also worked with blues, jazz, gospel or soul artists ( Eric Bibb , JP Bimeni etc … ).

True m an of culture and fraternity, he has remained unpredictable, as borne out by his multiple collaborations with Brain Damage he introduced to BigYouth , Kiddus I , Ras Michael , but to artists from completely different horizons as well like the Japanese Emiko Ota.

A wholehearted and rare figure. Irreplaceable.

Uzul unveils Sea Horse, first single of his album Evolve! A single at the crossroads of techno and minimal and dub sounds.

Uzul; Evolve; Sea horse Single

listen to Sea Horse

This track is a perfect hybrid between modern and minimal techno music in the style of Richie Hawtin and the dub sound of sound systems. The sounds of TB303 deliver their resources over time to make the title more and more hypnotic and in the background a deep breath machinery and analog synthesizers, bring a mechanical side, as if the song were the sound produced by a futuristic factory. The whole supported by a sharp and unstoppable skank which like a clock ticks the title. A progressive and hypnotic track, ideal for late hour mixes. A maximal techno dub track!

Uzul – Multiple Influences

In the early 1995s, after being a singer in Kaly Reggae Dub and High Tone, he was one of the founding members of the legendary Lyon group Kaly Live Dub, where he was assigned to sampler and effects. After a first side-project in 2007, Uzul is stepping up solo releases on many European labels. At the same time, he founded the breakbeat duo Hybrid Sound System. This exceptional composer with flawless musicality also creates the noise hip hop group Uzul Prod. Then, more recently 4GetMeNot, a project with a techno and UK bass aesthetic. In 2014, he joined forces with another maestro, Molécule, and formed the duo Granit for a 4 track EP.

This all-rounder with inexhaustible creativity, has been a precursor in terms of technique since its inception. Already in 1998, he was one of the first musicians to use an Atari 1040ST as well as Cubase. At the time, he bought his first sampler, associated it with this sequencer and created a live machines, a feat for the time! The memory capacity being ultra limited, he creates everything in real time, which gives him a much more lively way of playing.

The technique but not only. Uzul is also a pioneer in terms of musical aesthetics. He succumbs to the attraction of dubstep as soon as it begins to export from the London suburbs. Very quickly, he established himself as one of the rare live performers in the dubstep scene and was noticed by the cream of the overseas producers with whom he regularly shared the bill. In 2009, the prodigy Skream gave him a remix for Under Pressure, thus saluting a unique hyperactive artist.

This know-how and this head start can be found in his music as well as in his lives. Today he offers a live composed on Ableton Live which he combines with analog. The result is breathtaking, none of his lives are alike since he creates in real time.

Uzul‘s vinyl pre-order campaign is starting today! This is an ultra limited edition, only 150 copies are available for pre-order, reserve yours now before it’s too late! You will receive your vinyl in preview around May 15th. And as we believe in the power of music to embody and support the cultural transformation necessary for a sustainable future, this vinyle is eco-friendly*! We need your support for this project to see the light of day. I pre-order my vinyl on Diggers Factory.

Initially machinist in the famous dub band Kaly Live Dub, Uzul has participated in many innovative bass music projects throughout his 20 years of musical activism. Today he is about to release his first solo album on our label.

Last week was the very first edition of our Artem Effects project in Saint Raphael.  Artists’ residencies, concerts, trainings, documentaries broadcasts, conferences, … the program was full! We will even offer you a low-carbon and eco-responsible festival in 2022. We will explain all this in detail.

Artem Effects

Schvédranne; Live; Artem; Effects

In partnership with Artem83, an emblematic cultural player of the Southern region, we created Artem Effects. Supported by the city of Saint Raphaël through a convention the project aims to promote Saint Raphaël by offering cultural activities and events. In 2021, we set up a two-month artist residency for a working time dedicated to the development of live shows combining music and visual arts in collaboration with various places in the city. A concert will close each exit from residence. If possible, they will be open to the public. These concerts will be captured and broadcast, in streaming and via local TV and radio channels. In addition, as soon as the situation permits, we will offer other concerts in the region.

Five conferences on current music and contemporary arts issues are already planned for 2021. With the cinema Le Lido we also offer five screenings of documentaries dedicated to the arts, as for example our series World Wide Effects .  With our training center E.M.I.L, we will also offer introductory training in mixing, DJing, beatmaking or writing workshops around rap.

To top it all off in 2022 we will organize a carbon-free festival in partnership with Mobilvolts (photovoltaic energy specialist), Lu Sound (sound engineer) and MDE (Music Declares Emergency). The objective is to build on renewable resources, solar energy, waste recycling, zero plastics and carbon footprint compensated.

The first session

Artem; Effects; Schvédranne; live

The week began with a very first residence, that of Schvédranne. After having released four singles that mix deep sounds and techno melodies with the voice of the famous poet Jack Hirschmann the artist will release his new album soon on Jarring Effects. Throughout the week, he has perfected the live performance that will accompany his next album at the Felix Martin Hall with at the end, a live-out concert mixing music and visual arts. Four other art residencies are already scheduled this year. That’s not all, we also made a recording of the Schvédranne live at the heart of the Esplanade Bonaparte, powered entirely by our partner MobilVolt and its solar mobile generator.

We took the opportunity to officially launch the project with the media with a press conference. With the participation of Guillaume Decard (Deputy Mayor for Culture and Youth), Emmanuelle Picq-Charvet (President of Artem 83), Anna Franceschini (Vice-President of Artem 83), Mr Mo (Label manager of Jarring Effects), Jean-Marie Charvet (Manager of Cinema Le Lido), Yoann Lamarche (Founder Mobilvolts) and Boris Picq (Vice President MDE).

Eustache McQueer’s Unplugged EP is now available as a digipack CD! In a haunting neo-soul and folk epic, the duo takes you on an introspective journey around queer culture around the world.MockUp-CD-EMQ-minAfter the signing of their first album Lake Pearl in 2019 on Jarring Effects, the duo Eustache McQueer changes register and explores guitar compositions and vocals in acoustic version.

It is always with the idea of engaging and moving his audience that the duo takes a classical guitar on one side and a raw voice, without touch-up, on the other. With musical references ranging from bossa swaying sounds to German lieders. The subtle musicality of Laurent Dratler’s compositions accompanies the voice of Joël Defrance. A thoughtful acoustic album punctuated with stories ranging from the intimate to the collective, with songs that tell stories of plural love, revolt or wandering.

From this obvious complicity emerges a universe of cosmic and melancholy sensations, typical of the queer aesthetic of Eustache McQueer. An ode to sensuality simple and free.

After a very special year, the JFX team is happy to wish you a great 2021! We are more motivated than ever and we are preparing you for this new year. We tell you more at the end of the article. In the meantime, we invite you to rediscover the highlights of 2020 at Jarring Effects. We made you a rewind video of the releases of the year on the three labels of the constellation Jarring Effects, I named Galant Records (hip hop label) and Slab Note (techno label).

Collectif Fleury & Nicolas Repac

On the Jarring side, it started very strong with the release of the Collectif Fleury & Nicolas Repac project in March. The album is written and performed by a dozen French-speaking inmates of all origins and arranged by Nicolas Repac, known notably for his collaborations with Arthur H, Alain Bashung or Thiéfaine but especially for his unique art of making machines sing and groove. Between musical album and sound documentary, between rap, song and poetry… the project is a true free speech out of the walls of the prison of Fleury Mérogis.

Unplugged – Eustache McQueer

In the middle of 2020, the acoustic project Unplugged by the duo Eustache McQueer was released. An introspective journey around queer culture around the world. It is always with the idea of engaging and moving his audience that the duo captures a classical guitar on one side and a raw voice, without touch-up, on the other, with musical references ranging from bossa chaloupées to German lieders. The subtle musicality of Laurent Dratler’s compositions accompanies the voice of Joël Defrance. A thoughtful acoustic album punctuated with stories ranging from the intimate to the collective, with songs that tell stories of plural love, revolt or wandering.

Les Mamans du Congo & RROBIN

You have not been able to miss this huge project on the initiative of the Institut Française du Congo, the Coopérative de Mai and the Jarring Effects label. The album Les Mamans du Congo & RROBIN, released on November 13th, really won over the press and the national and international public.

Conducted by singer and percussionist Gladys Samba, the women’s group Les Mamans du Congo was born in 2018 in Brazzaville. In a project where dance merges with the ancestral lullabies Kongos, the five mothers sing in Lari the history of their people as well as the daily life of Congolese women set to music on complex rhythms played with forks, plates, baskets, drumsticks and recovery equipment. The collective meets in 2019 the French producer RROBIN, specialist of hip-hop and house beats. Grems‘ favorite beatmaker, he was already interested in new African urban voices on his first album Déluge where South African rapper Spoek Mathambo was among the guests.

Despite the difficult situation, the team is super motivated for 2021, we have lots of great ideas and great projects for this new year! It’s going to start very hard with the solo project of Uzul, machinist of the band Kaly Live Dub. An album with techno, house and bass music accents. 2021 also announces the return of Brain Damage. Composed with legendary Jamaican singer Big Youth, the album will feature a hybrid form of resolutely demanding reggae. After four activist techno singles on the label of the constellation JFX Slab Note, Schvédranne will unveil this year an album full of surprises. And to top it all off, a new Zentone will be launched in the second half of 2021.

Stay tuned !

Today, Eustache McQueer releases his new EP Unplugged! In a haunting neo-soul and folk, the duo takes you on an introspective journey around queer culture around the world. For this occasion the singer with the inimitable voice unveils the music video of the title “Ballad Of Lake Pearl”, a moving ballad inviting to the mystical or erotic encounter.

For the release of their EP Unplugged, the duo looks back on the homophobic attack suffered by singer Joël Defrance in an LGBTQI+ meeting place, «La Perle du Lac», on the shores of Lake Geneva. His struggle to overcome this ordeal was music. Eustache McQueer recounts this struggle by transposing it into a nostalgic song articulated with lyrical parts and endowed with a rich and sharp composition of Laurent Dratler (aka Virilio, guitarist and beatmaker of the duo). To conclude this exploration of the queer cultures of the world, Eustache McQueer proposes an initiatory journey into another world, a fairy-tale wood. Here, dreams, mysteries, awareness and acceptance become one. Time literally stops. In order not to get lost in this forest, it remains only to be guided by this original folk EP.

It is always with the idea of engaging and moving his audience that the duo captures a classical guitar on one side and a raw voice, without touch-up, on the other, with musical references going up to German lieders. The subtle musicality of Laurent Dratler’s compositions accompanies the voice of Joël Defrance. A thoughtful acoustic album punctuated with stories ranging from the intimate to the collective, with songs that tell stories of plural love, revolt or wandering.

From this obvious complicity emerges a universe of cosmic and melancholy sensations, clean the queer aesthetic of Eustache McQueer. An ode to sensuality simple and free.

The album Fleury with Nicolas Repac is finally available on all digital plateform. Between music and documentary, between rap, song and poetry, a free speech released from Fleury Mérogis prison.

The artist reveals 11 titles that can be understood as sort of short films which draws up a series of original portraits. He addresses the themes of loneliness, pain of uprooting, the absence of the father, social humiliation, love and sexual misery, but also nostalgia for childhood and the dream of success.

La Dame Blanche album artwork
La Dame Blanche new album

La Dame Blanche reveals her new album « Bajo El Mismo Cielo » today.
An album of connections, an explosive mix of cumbia, hip-hop and latin beats !

Before releasing this album to the world, Yaite (aka La Dame Blanche) sheds light on the path she pursues : « With Marc Damblé, aka Babylotion, my producer, we continue to explore these universes that always intrigue us so much ». Yaite, however, stays on course, for this third opus : less flute, more hip hop. La Dame Blanche explains : « I find there a freedom, which I don’t meet in any other style »

Freedom doesn’t stops her from working and from the fierce desire to improve her flow. Yaite says : « I find as and when how to place my voice on an interesting rhythm, to find my own vocal style. During my tours, I met MCs that I love, like Rincon Sapiência in Brazil. Their flows inspire me !» And words take rhythm in her body.

« At first, you write a simple poetry. Then naturally, very organically, the text begins to dance, to deliver its rhythmic through your mouth, your body … »

Organically, naturally : the freedom that hip hop brings her also delivers her soul. In her lyrics, she sings the story of her mom’s neighbor and her tragic fate (Ave Maria), describes people with personality disorders (Dos Caras), or a woman with an exhausted body (No da para na ‘ ) …But above all, for the first time, she speaks about herself. « Before, I wrote about my ancestors, my neighbors, my friends. Today, in this personal record, I tell more about myself », she says. Yaite also admits she has « lowered the guard » and wanted to offer a less « aggressive » record.

This quest for intimacy may be explained by the tight team around this musical creation. If the previous record called for plenty of producers, « Bajo El Mismo Cielo » was made in a limited clan, around the duo Yaite-Babylotion.

If the album turns out more coherent in terms of sound, it is also adorned with different colors, with rich featurings. (Nelson Palacios, Rincon Sapiência, Philippe Cohen-Solal, Manteiga, Aero Manyelo)

« I love featurings : the interpretation of my songs by other people, and these moments of conviviality, meeting around my music »

Bajo El Mismo Cielo imposes itself as a big party where humans are welcome, but also spirits, as Yaite says : « I will never detach myself from them. In each song, a sentence comes from my divinatory cards. The character of La Dame Blanche doesn’t let me go either: I do everything to keep her with me ». She concludes : « For me, it’s a record filled with hope : freed from aggression, but fed with strength, energy and power. »

This new opus is available now !

Jarring Effects Label and Sinnbus Records are proud to present the Premiere of « Yeah But No – Sand (Mudaze Remix) »

What about Yeah But No ? Yeah But No from Berlin released their self-titled debut album in November, accompanied by a couple of singles and EPs. After touring on their own and as support for Sylvan Esso and Zoot Woman, another extensive tour segment is due to begin in the May 2018.
Merging electronic music with classic song structures into a smart and captivating listening enjoyment. That’s Yeah But No’s objective. The duo from Berlin is comprised of techno producer Douglas Greed and singer Fabian Kuss. The former made a name for himself in the techno scene and recently released an album together with Mooryc with their mutual project Eating Snow.

The two get to know each other four years ago when Greed was looking for a singer for his tracks. Tasteful success label Freude am Tanzen releases his music during that time and he tours through Europe, plays in Mexico and Australia. In Fabian Kuss he finds the matching counterpart. Not only has he studied voice but also stood on stages all across the country and explored musical styles from jazz to funk and pop with his bands.

Now Yeah But No announce the release of « Remixes I », one of two EPs containing contributions by friends made along the way, and artists Yeah But No became friends and fans of. Karmon (Diynamic), Daniel Brandt (Erased Tapes, Brandt Brauer Frick etc.), Marc Holstege (Stil vor Talent), Panthera Krause (Uncanny Valley, Riotvan, ORS etc.), and Mudaze (Beast Entertainment) promise a good round of tasteful listening pleasure.

Brain Damage Meets Harrison Stafford

Brain Damage and Harrison Stafford (Groundation) will unveil their album Liberation Time on October 20th. Today we reveal the artwork of one of the most anticipated albums of the year, directed by Ben Hito !

To gain some grasp of the genesis of this new project, that may seem surprising at first, let’s address what both artists have in common, rather that what differentiates them. Internationally recognized masters in the styles, respectively reggae & dub, that they are developing in parallel for almost 20 years, without never really meeting each other, the two protagonists strive to challenge their codes in an ever greater respect to their Jamaican roots: two decades furthering a relentless fight against musical orthodoxy, to the benefit of interbreedings that have always been major contributions to music — and arts in general — History. This is evidenced by jazz and Jamaican traditional music fusion in the case of Harrison Stafford, and notably with his amazing adventure with Groundation, as well as by Martin Nathan countless experimentations, over Brain Damage prolific discography, always digging in more unlikely and audacious directions.

From this unexpected collaboration will stem « Liberation Time » album, an LP that will delight many fans of the two artists’ works, all what builds their respective uniqueness being there so well intricated. Harrison Stafford unique voice supports, in a most elegant way, the delivery of a uniting message focused on self-empowerment through music and his universalist vision of Rastafarian faith. Brain Damage writing and production, on the other hand, appear always more subtle and personal, intellectualized yet visceral. Solid compositions, hit melodies and classy dub effects are among assets that will undoubtedly confirm « Liberation Time » as one of the most accomplished collaboration project of this year.

With more than 11 albums behind him, Martin Nathan ventures into many artistic and stylistic experiments, under the name of Brain Damage. He has spent 15 years alternating between his solo project and music collaborations in order to establish the roots of his musical art. His friendship with Samuel Clayton Jr, sound engineer and internationally recognized producer (Steel Pulse / Toots & the Maytals) opened the door of the legendary Harry J Studio (Bob Marley / Burning Spear), and offered him the opportunity to attend some interesting meetings and to work, during unforgettable studio sessions in Kingston, with legends such as Horace Andy, Kiddus I, Willi Williams, Winston McAnuff and Ras Michael.
Everyone single one of them was able to travel to the musical universe suggested by Brain Damage, and was able to follow the style suggested by the artist. Thus, they wrote the majority of their songs about their infancy, childhood, youth, and education. The result of this collaboration is unique. It is a mixture of maturity and freshness probably due to the openness and talent of each protagonist. The dub/reggae album « Walk the Walk » came out on October 16th on Jarring Effects.
Here is this opus genesis : discover now Walk the Walk’s legends on video!

The director Wasaru joined him during his journey in Jamaica.
